Exhale (2025) is a chromogenic print by Tyler Shields, issued as an edition of 3 and available in six sizes from 20 × 15 to 84 × 63 inches. Among the artist's most recent works, the piece demonstrates his continued mastery of the chromogenic printing process—a technique producing exceptionally rich, archivally stable images with a luminosity that has long attracted serious collectors to his practice. The title evokes both a physical act—the release of breath—and a psychological one: the relief that follows a moment of sustained tension. Shields is drawn to gestures that occupy this threshold between tension and release, and Exhale distills this sensibility into a single, carefully constructed image. Whether through smoke, breath, or the subtle language of the body, the work captures a moment of transience and beauty, the ephemeral made permanent by the precision of the photographic medium. As a 2025 work, Exhale represents Shields at the height of his powers—an artist who continues to evolve while maintaining the commitment to craft and compositional rigor that has defined his practice for more than two decades. Available in six sizes up to 84 × 63 inches, the work offers collectors flexibility across a range of spaces and contexts, its largest formats delivering a physical presence that is nothing short of commanding. Chromogenic printing—requiring precise chemical processing and exceptional quality control—produces photographs of extraordinary color fidelity and archival permanence, making it the preferred medium of photographers who demand the highest possible standard of image quality. Tyler Shields’ work is represented in significant private collections across the United States, Europe, and beyond, and this image stands as a compelling example of the formal intelligence and visual authority that have made him one of the most consequential photographers working in the contemporary fine art market today.

Tyler Shields Edge of Reality

Tyler Shields was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and began his creative career as a professional inline skater, competing in the X Games and touring with Tony Hawk before shifting his focus to photography. His early photographs gained attention online, and a chance viral image helped launch his career as a photographer working within the Hollywood entertainment world.
Shields is known for bold, provocative photography that blends glamour with elements of tension, danger, and destruction, often incorporating rich color, dramatic lighting, and meticulously staged scenes. His work frequently explores contrasts between beauty and chaos, using striking visual concepts, from vivid color explosions to scenes built around luxury objects, to create images that are both polished and unsettling. He has photographed a wide range of actors and public figures throughout his career, always aiming for a cinematic, tightly composed final image captured in camera rather than through digital manipulation.
Beyond photography, Shields has worked as a filmmaker, screenwriter, and author, publishing both photography books and fiction. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections, and he continues to be based in Los Angeles.
