About this work

Tyler Shields' Black Water (2012) is a digital C-print issued as an edition of 3 and currently available in the 28 × 40-inch format. From the early years of Shields' mature practice, the work demonstrates the dramatic visual intelligence and commitment to extreme tonal contrast that established him as a major voice in contemporary photography—an image that rewards viewing at scale with an intensity that is both visually compelling and emotionally arresting. Black Water is a study in the visual possibilities of dark water—the way it absorbs light, reflects it, and creates a surface simultaneously opaque and luminous. Shields brings a subject photographer's intensity to this elemental encounter, producing an image in which the figure's engagement with the water becomes a study in contrasts: light against dark, skin against liquid, warmth against cold. The deeply tonal character of the image gives it a formal severity and classical quality that distinguishes it within Shields' broader body of work. Created in 2012, Black Water occupies an important historical position in Shields' oeuvre—a work from the period of intense productivity in which the artist established many of the visual preoccupations that would define his practice for the following decade. For collectors seeking works of genuine historical significance from within Shields' collected output, the remaining available size of this celebrated edition represents an exceptional and timely opportunity. The digital C-print process produces images of exceptional tonal range, color accuracy, and long-term archival stability, ensuring that the work retains its full visual impact for decades to come.

About Tyler Shields

Tyler Shields was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and began his creative career as a professional inline skater, competing in the X Games and touring with Tony Hawk before shifting his focus to photography. His early photographs gained attention online, and a chance viral image helped launch his career as a photographer working within the Hollywood entertainment world.

Shields is known for bold, provocative photography that blends glamour with elements of tension, danger, and destruction, often incorporating rich color, dramatic lighting, and meticulously staged scenes. His work frequently explores contrasts between beauty and chaos, using striking visual concepts, from vivid color explosions to scenes built around luxury objects, to create images that are both polished and unsettling. He has photographed a wide range of actors and public figures throughout his career, always aiming for a cinematic, tightly composed final image captured in camera rather than through digital manipulation.

Beyond photography, Shields has worked as a filmmaker, screenwriter, and author, publishing both photography books and fiction. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections, and he continues to be based in Los Angeles.
