About this work

Tyler Shields' French Inhale (2022) is a digital C-print from The Dirty Side of Glamour series, issued as an edition of 3 and available in four sizes from 18 × 18 to 60 × 60 inches. The work belongs to one of Shields' most celebrated bodies of work—a series that strips glamour of its perfection to reveal the dangerous and deeply seductive beauty beneath its polished surface. The title refers to the smoking technique in which exhaled smoke is simultaneously inhaled through the nose—an act both controlled and abandoned, elegant and self-destructive. Shields transforms this gesture into a visual metaphor for the dual nature of allure: the way beauty and transgression are never far apart, and the way the most captivating images always contain within them a suggestion of risk. The composition captures this charged moment with the drama and precision that define his finest work. The Dirty Side of Glamour has established itself as a landmark series in contemporary photography, and French Inhale is among its most resonant images—a work that distills the series' central argument into a single, unforgettable gesture. For collectors of Shields' work, it represents an essential acquisition from a body of work that has earned enduring critical attention and collector devotion worldwide. The Dirty Side of Glamour brought Shields international recognition and remains foundational to his artistic legacy—a series that reshaped conversations about glamour, transgression, and the possibilities of fine art photography. The digital C-print process produces images of exceptional tonal range, color accuracy, and long-term archival stability, ensuring that the work retains its full visual impact for decades to come.

About Tyler Shields

Tyler Shields was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and began his creative career as a professional inline skater, competing in the X Games and touring with Tony Hawk before shifting his focus to photography. His early photographs gained attention online, and a chance viral image helped launch his career as a photographer working within the Hollywood entertainment world.

Shields is known for bold, provocative photography that blends glamour with elements of tension, danger, and destruction, often incorporating rich color, dramatic lighting, and meticulously staged scenes. His work frequently explores contrasts between beauty and chaos, using striking visual concepts, from vivid color explosions to scenes built around luxury objects, to create images that are both polished and unsettling. He has photographed a wide range of actors and public figures throughout his career, always aiming for a cinematic, tightly composed final image captured in camera rather than through digital manipulation.

Beyond photography, Shields has worked as a filmmaker, screenwriter, and author, publishing both photography books and fiction. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections, and he continues to be based in Los Angeles.
