About this work

Bow Silhouette by Tyler Shields from the Silhouettes Series. Silhouettes marks a venture from Shields previous portraits and photographs, which revolve heavily around vivid expressions. He writes, “I’ve spent the majority of my photography career avoiding harsh shadows in an image, but the series changed all that it was no longer about avoiding the darkness but creating it.” Even in a new form, Shields’ affinity for glamor shines through. The shots have the same timeless feel as some of his other photographs; one he describes as feeling like “[they] could have been taken yesterday or 50 years ago.” Photographed on a hassleblad film camera, with the original boarder, the pieces maintain a feel of authenticity and timelessness, as though they could have been captured many years ago. There are levels of dualism in the images Shields creates. The obvious contrast of light and dark speaks to the sense of freedom that’s found in anonymity. By focusing on form, Shields is able to create something from nothing and achieve the same level of storytelling as his previous collections. His pieces manage to conceal the hard work that goes into the final product. Shields insists there’s a difference between “taking an image” and “making an image.” From finding the right film, camera, and light combination, to timing the perfect shot, there were many trials and errors that had to be overcome for his vision to come to life. As Shields says himself, “If hard work is done correctly the viewer see’s only effortlessness.”

About Tyler Shields

Tyler Shields was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and began his creative career as a professional inline skater, competing in the X Games and touring with Tony Hawk before shifting his focus to photography. His early photographs gained attention online, and a chance viral image helped launch his career as a photographer working within the Hollywood entertainment world.

Shields is known for bold, provocative photography that blends glamour with elements of tension, danger, and destruction, often incorporating rich color, dramatic lighting, and meticulously staged scenes. His work frequently explores contrasts between beauty and chaos, using striking visual concepts, from vivid color explosions to scenes built around luxury objects, to create images that are both polished and unsettling. He has photographed a wide range of actors and public figures throughout his career, always aiming for a cinematic, tightly composed final image captured in camera rather than through digital manipulation.

Beyond photography, Shields has worked as a filmmaker, screenwriter, and author, publishing both photography books and fiction. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections, and he continues to be based in Los Angeles.
