Tyler Shields' Under the Rain (2018) is a chromogenic print from the Edge of Reality Exhibition, issued as an edition of 3 plus 2 artist's proofs and currently available in its 60 × 60-inch format (framed to 62.5 × 62.5 inches). The work is among Shields' most emotionally resonant and personally revealing images, accompanied by the artist's own reflection on resilience and human connection in the face of life's storms. Shields has written: 'Storms will come and go throughout your life. Some people wash away with them; some people ride out the storm with you. Make sure you hold onto the ones that hold onto you. If you always run from the storm, the day you get caught it will cause the most damage. We run out of fear; we face the storm out of courage; and we all go through storms at some point.' These words reveal the emotional intelligence underlying an image of considerable visual drama: the figure under the rain, saturated and present, refusing to run. In the chromogenic print, rain becomes a subject of extraordinary visual richness—light catching on falling water, the body responding to its weight, an ordinary meteorological event transformed by Shields' vision into a metaphor for endurance and grace. Under the Rain is among the most significant and emotionally complex works in Shields' entire output. Its availability in this large-scale final format makes it a particularly significant acquisition opportunity for collectors seeking works of genuine personal and artistic depth. Works from the Edge of Reality Exhibition represent some of the most technically refined and conceptually considered images Shields has produced, each one a demonstration of the full depth of his craft as both photographer and artist.

Tyler Shields: The Provocateur of Photography

Helmut Newton x Tyler Shields

Tyler Shields was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and began his creative career as a professional inline skater, competing in the X Games and touring with Tony Hawk before shifting his focus to photography. His early photographs gained attention online, and a chance viral image helped launch his career as a photographer working within the Hollywood entertainment world.
Shields is known for bold, provocative photography that blends glamour with elements of tension, danger, and destruction, often incorporating rich color, dramatic lighting, and meticulously staged scenes. His work frequently explores contrasts between beauty and chaos, using striking visual concepts, from vivid color explosions to scenes built around luxury objects, to create images that are both polished and unsettling. He has photographed a wide range of actors and public figures throughout his career, always aiming for a cinematic, tightly composed final image captured in camera rather than through digital manipulation.
Beyond photography, Shields has worked as a filmmaker, screenwriter, and author, publishing both photography books and fiction. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections, and he continues to be based in Los Angeles.
