About the Steel Cuts Series

Steel Cuts | Tom Wesselmann | Guy Hepner, New York

Market Performance

Tom Wesselmann's laser-cut steel works are among his most commercially significant productions, with major examples achieving six-figure results at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Phillips. The Steel Drawings combine the graphic clarity of his print practice with the three-dimensional presence of sculpture, creating objects of extraordinary visual impact that perform strongly in both the primary and secondary markets.

About the Series

In the late 1980s, Wesselmann began translating his characteristic graphic imagery — the great American nude's contours, his still life subjects, his floral compositions — into laser-cut painted steel. The resulting works are at once paintings and sculptures, flat drawn images given material depth and physical presence through fabrication in steel.

The technique allowed Wesselmann to push the graphic qualities of his drawing practice into a new register: forms that cast shadows, create spatial dialogue with their environments, and reward viewing from multiple angles. Available in standing and wall-mounted configurations, the steel works have become his most collected three-dimensional productions.
