Acrylic, spray paint, pastel, and resin on canvas wrapped panel

About this work

Sage Barnes has emerged as a compelling voice among a new generation of artists working at the intersection of street art sensibilities and refined studio practice. Based in Los Angeles, Barnes has cultivated a distinctive visual language that synthesizes gestural abstraction with the raw immediacy of urban mark-making, drawing comparisons to the legacy of postwar American expressionism while remaining firmly rooted in contemporary discourse. Study #1 exemplifies the artist's ongoing investigation into layered surfaces and material tension. The work brings together acrylic, spray paint, and pastel beneath a luminous resin finish, creating a push-and-pull between depth and surface that rewards sustained viewing. The title suggests an exploratory mode—a deliberate stepping back from finished statement toward something more provisional and searching. This approach allows Barnes to work through formal problems in real time, leaving traces of revision and intuition visible within the final composition. The canvas-wrapped panel provides structural integrity that supports the weight of accumulated media, while the resin seal preserves the atmospheric interplay of matte and gloss passages. At 24 by 20 inches, this unique signed work operates at an intimate scale that belies its visual complexity. The piece represents an accessible entry point into Barnes's practice for collectors seeking to engage with an artist whose market presence continues to develop alongside growing institutional and critical attention. Works from this period document a pivotal moment in the artist's evolution as the underlying investigations here inform larger, more ambitious canvases. About the Paintings Series

Paintings | Sage Barnes | Guy Hepner, New York

About the Series

Beyond the Bloom series, Barnes produces original paintings across a range of subjects and formats that demonstrate the breadth of his figurative practice. These works — portraits, figure studies, and compositions that depart from the botanical environments of the Bloom series — reveal the underlying technical rigour and observational precision that gives all his work its distinctive quality.

The Paintings series represents Barnes's most experimental output: works where he tests formal ideas outside the established framework of the Bloom paintings, producing pieces that are often more intimate in scale and more direct in their engagement with the figure.

About Sage Barnes

Sage Barnes is a self-taught American artist working from his studio, known as "the lab," in Kansas. He studied for a time at FIDM in Los Angeles before leaving to pursue art full time, first gaining recognition in 2016 for a series of urban style paintings featuring suited male figures.

Barnes combines abstract, realistic, and street art techniques, often within the same piece, using acrylic and spray paint alongside non-traditional materials such as neon, stucco, and concrete. His figurative portraits are especially distinctive, frequently obscuring the head with bursts of color, smiley faces, floral arrangements, or splattered paint, shifting attention away from identity and toward gesture and emotion. His process is physical and often destructive by design, incorporating action painting and, at times, breaking into finished surfaces with tools to reveal new forms underneath.

His work explores universal experiences of identity, introspection, and everyday behavior, often approached with a dry, tongue in cheek sense of humor beneath the visual intensity. Barnes continues to push the material boundaries of painting, treating each new body of work as an opportunity to expand his technique.

His work is held in private collections throughout North America and internationally, and he has held multiple solo exhibitions, including several with Guy Hepner in New York.
