Russell Young's Western series emerged from the artist's childhood fascination with American frontier mythology, formed watching anamorphic widescreen Western films while growing up in Northern England. Relocating that imagined "edge of America" into his mature practice, Young turned his screenprinting and diamond dust technique toward cowboys, Native American chiefs, and the visual iconography of the American West — expanding his usual subject matter beyond Hollywood and music into a broader inquiry about freedom, danger, and the myths that built a national identity.

The series includes historically significant portraits of Native American leaders — including Apache chief Geronimo and Siksika chief Curley Bear, rendered in stark black-and-white diamond dust screenprints that lend historical photographs a contemporary, almost monumental presence — alongside works referencing classic Western cinema, including a large-scale tribute to "The Magnificent Seven." The Cowboy Monumental, a hand-painted acrylic work on linen measuring nearly nine feet tall, represents one of the largest and most ambitious single pieces in Young's entire practice, executed in a photorealist technique distinct from his usual screenprinting process.
