Niall Campbell Strachan is a Scottish painter born in 1986 whose work operates in the space between instinct and invention. Working across canvas, cardboard, wood, and reclaimed surfaces, he builds a cast of imagined beings that arrive fully formed from the subconscious and land, with quiet authority, in the real world.
The creatures Strachan paints resist easy classification. They are animals, but not quite. They carry expressions — curiosity, melancholy, a low-grade bewilderment — that feel borrowed from somewhere human. Simple in form but complex in presence, they stumble through a tribally ornate abstraction much like their human counterparts. That tension between the elemental and the emotionally nuanced is where Strachan's work earns its place.
