Oil stick matte vinyl acrylic spray paint charcoal and pencil on canvas

79 x 61 in 200.0 x 156.0 cm

Nathan Paddison has established himself as one of the most urgent voices in contemporary painting, his practice defined by an accumulated layering of materials and intentions that mirror the accretion of thought itself. Working across oil stick, matte vinyl, acrylic, spray paint, charcoal, and pencil on canvas, Paddison constructs surfaces that hold the evidence of their own making—each medium a stratum of decision, revision, and impulse preserved within the whole. "If that's the case when do I start? I found app..." engages the viewer in the suspended logic of a question caught mid-formation. The title—fragmentary, trailing off at precisely the moment of potential resolution—enacts the very condition it describes: the paralysis of beginning, the search for permission, the discovery that precedes action. At 79 by 61 inches, the canvas demands physical presence, the scale transforming an interior monologue into something architectural and unavoidable. Paddison refuses to complete the thought, and in that refusal finds a more honest representation of how decisions actually form—incomplete, provisional, reaching. The work's material density amplifies this tension. The convergence of spray paint's velocity with charcoal's erasability, of pencil's precision with oil stick's weight, produces a surface in which no single gesture dominates. Each layer qualifies the next, just as each clause in the title qualifies what preceded it. The result is a painting that operates less as statement than as process made visible—thinking rendered as object, the question still open.
