Other Monoprints brings together a group of unique works on paper from across Mel Bochner's Thesaurus painting practice, each one produced individually rather than as part of a numbered edition. Titles in this group include It's Always Something, As Good as It Gets, Obvious, Chuckle and I Don't Get It, phrases drawn from the same method Bochner developed from his 1966 use of Roget's Thesaurus as raw material for language-based art.
Made using oil with collage, engraving and embossment on hand-dyed handmade paper, these monoprints allow Bochner to treat colour, texture and surface as variables in a way that his numbered print editions cannot: no two sheets are identical, and each is worked by hand as a singular object. The hybrid monoprint technique — part painting, part printmaking — lets him layer pigment, cut into the paper's surface, and build up physical texture around the stencilled or hand-rendered text, giving each work a distinct material presence even when the underlying phrase is one he has used elsewhere.

Bochner's monoprints are made from a single laser-cut acrylic plastic matrix filled with specially altered oil paint, pressed into handmade paper under roughly 750 tons of hydraulic pressure — no two impressions are identical.

He developed this process in collaboration with printer David Lasry at Two Palms Press in New York, where Bochner worked for 31 years starting in 1994.

The oil paints used are custom-mixed with linseed oil, stand oil and damar varnish; their viscosity has to be precisely tuned through trial and error so each pigment releases cleanly from the plate.

The papers are handmade at Twinrocker Handmade Paper in Indiana, air-dried for softness, then hand-dyed with alcohol-based pigments and sometimes further hand-painted or collaged before printing.

To suppress his own color biases, Bochner has occasionally asked his printers to select color placement themselves, deliberately building an element of chance into the finished work.
