About this work
Hugo Baudouin has emerged as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary still life painting, bringing a distinctly European sensibility to a genre often overlooked by younger artists. Working exclusively in oil on linen, Baudouin demonstrates a technical command that recalls the Dutch Golden Age masters while maintaining a thoroughly contemporary perspective. His work has gained significant traction among collectors who recognize the resurgence of traditional painting methods executed with modern intent. *Creamy Candle Stick* exemplifies Baudouin's ongoing investigation into domestic objects as vessels of meaning. The intimate scale of this 2026 work—just 30x24 centimeters—demands close viewing, drawing the observer into a quiet meditation on light, texture, and the poetry of everyday forms. Baudouin's treatment of the candle, rendered with his characteristic tonal subtlety, transforms the mundane into something approaching the sacred without descending into sentimentality. The linen substrate, visible in areas where the artist allows the weave to interact with his brushwork, adds a tactile dimension that photography cannot fully convey. This piece belongs to a period in which Baudouin has concentrated on singular objects isolated against neutral grounds, stripping away narrative context to focus purely on the act of seeing. The result is work that rewards sustained attention and reveals new qualities over time. As institutional interest in figurative and representational painting continues to strengthen, Baudouin's position within this movement appears increasingly secure. Guy Hepner is pleased to offer this work and welcomes inquiries from collectors interested in acquisition.

About Hugo Baudouin
Hugo Baudouin is a French artist based in Berlin. Before turning to painting, he spent years immersed in skateboarding and street culture, an influence that continues to shape the energy and attitude in his work. He came to painting through his studies in applied arts and interior design, developing his practice alongside that formal education.
Baudouin creates expressive, figurative work using a combination of oils, acrylics, and spray paint, centered on bold lines and exaggerated faces and characters. His paintings explore the idea of a hidden or inner self, drawing on social iconography and aesthetic fantasy to examine how identity shifts depending on whether a person is alone or surrounded by others. Figures in his work often appear as if caught mid expression, confronting the viewer directly and raising questions about persona, individuality, and the pressure to perform for an audience, whether in a crowd or online.
His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Urban Nation Museum in Berlin, Guy Hepner in New York, and galleries across the UK, Germany, and Canada.
He continues to live and work in Berlin.
