Sweetly, 2022
Giclée On Archival Cold Press Cotton Rag 300gsm
20 x 24 in | 50.8 x 61 cm
Edition of 25
Sweetly (2022) is a giclée print on archival cold press cotton rag (300gsm) by Gregory Thielker, produced in an edition of twenty-five and measuring 20 by 24 inches (50.8 x 61 cm). The work belongs to Thielker’s series The Liquid Night—a body of work that explores the visual experience of rain-blurred light as seen through car windshields, presenting familiar urban and suburban scenes transformed by the distorting, dissolving medium of water on glass. Thielker is one of the most significant painters working today in the tradition of photorealism, and The Liquid Night series represents the most sustained and fully realised expression of his engagement with perception, atmosphere, and the phenomenology of driving. In Sweetly, the characteristic visual language of the series is deployed with full expressive force. The rain-streaked surface of the windshield fractures and multiplies the light sources beyond it—streetlights, traffic signals, the glow of shop windows—into cascading streams of colour and luminosity that transform the prosaic into the lyrical. Thielker’s command of the relationship between sharp focus and atmospheric dissolution creates images that are simultaneously precise and painterly, grounded in the specific and reaching toward the universal. The archival cotton rag paper of the giclée edition captures the full tonal range and detail of the original oil painting with exceptional fidelity. Gregory Thielker’s work has been the subject of sustained critical interest and institutional attention, establishing him as one of the foremost practitioners of contemporary photorealist painting in America. The Liquid Night series draws on the tradition of urban observation in American art while translating it through a visual technology—the rain-covered windshield—that is both entirely modern and deeply poetic. Sweetly is among the most atmospheric works in the series, its title conveying the quality of longing and beauty that Thielker consistently discovers in the most ordinary circumstances of contemporary life.

Gregory Thielker is an American artist currently based in Geneva, Switzerland, known for hyperrealistic oil paintings that capture the experience of perception itself. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ringling College of Art and Design and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.
Thielker's paintings are meticulously rendered, often taking weeks or months to complete, and focus on scenes viewed through obscured or shifting perspectives, most notably roads and landscapes seen through rain-streaked car windows. His series Under the Unminding Sky captures these blurred, in-between moments, using precision technique to convey something closer to memory or mood than a straightforward record of place. Working from personal photographs and direct observation, he is drawn to how the road frames and limits the way landscape is experienced.
His work has taken him around the world, including extended projects in India, Afghanistan, El Salvador, and along the entire length of the US Mexico border. He is a Fulbright Fellow and has completed residencies in Norway, Argentina, and India, among others.
Thielker has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, with venues including Guy Hepner in New York, Galerie Le Feuvre & Roze in Paris, and Castor Gallery in New York. His work has been featured in Juxtapoz, The Guardian, and La Repubblica.
