Fontaine Scarelli is a Chicago-born abstract expressionist painter whose large-scale canvases explore the threshold between reality and illusion through layered oil, acrylic, and charcoal. In the painting Standing Ruin, a monumental near-square diptych, grey, lavender, cream, burnt red, and a single burst of cadmium yellow play across an enormous surface layered with visual incident. The seam of the diptych runs like a fault line through the composition, dividing yet unifying the work's atmosphere of beautiful collapse.
