Overview
Each work is a nod to our individualism and, at times, isolationist attitudes towards our relationship with the world.
Yokoteen’s “Friends In Paradise” series is the culmination of years of technique and subject matter experimentation. Focused on his feline figures, each work portrays the cats in serene Hawaiian landscapes, either surfing or floating in solitude, as a nod to our individualism and, at times, isolationist attitudes towards our relationship with the world. Using non-human motifs as his subject, Yokoteen attempts to bridge self-identity and our identity as a human family by not conveying a specific race or gender. Instead, the viewer can float alongside his figures and experience the same calm and peace they do in the work.
“I have been working on wave works, and I would like to express the power and transparency of the sea. When you hear the word oil painting, many people may feel a heavy image, but I hope you can feel the oil painting more closely." - Yokoteen
