Who You Are, 2023
Oil on canvas
20 x 16 in 50.8 x 40.6 cm
Eric Stefanski's "Who You Are" presents the titular phrase rendered in his characteristic hand-painted text, the words emerging from a ground that carries the weight of accumulated gesture and deliberate mark-making. The letters themselves become sculptural presences on the canvas, their edges softened or sharpened by the artist's brush, revealing the tension between legibility and abstraction that defines Stefanski's practice. The oil medium allows for a depth and luminosity that gives the words an almost physical presence, as though they might lift from the surface. The phrase "Who You Are" operates as both question and statement, an incomplete thought that invites the viewer to participate in its meaning. Stefanski treats language not as mere communication but as emotional architecture—these three words carry the weight of identity, self-examination, and the perpetual negotiation between how we see ourselves and how we are perceived. The simplicity of the statement belies its psychological complexity, creating a meditative space where introspection becomes unavoidable. Within Stefanski's broader body of work, this piece exemplifies his commitment to distilling human experience into its most essential verbal forms. His text-based paintings function as contemporary mantras, capturing the emotional residue of phrases we encounter, internalize, and carry with us. The scale of this work—intimate at 20 x 16 inches—reinforces its personal register, suggesting a private confrontation rather than a public declaration. The painting rewards sustained looking, revealing subtle variations in texture and tone that give the familiar words renewed presence. Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.
Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.
His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.
He continues to live and work in Chicago.
