About this work

Eric Stefanski's "We Were Meant For Each Other" presents the titular phrase in his characteristic hand-rendered typography, the words sprawling across the canvas with an intimacy that belies their monumental scale. The letters appear at once deliberate and urgent, their edges softened by the accumulation of paint layers that give the surface a tactile density. Stefanski's palette here tends toward muted, atmospheric tones that allow the text to emerge as both declaration and whisper, the visual weight of each word calibrated to mirror the emotional gravity of the statement itself. The phrase operates in that liminal space Stefanski so often inhabits—somewhere between romantic affirmation and existential questioning. Is this a love letter, a reassurance, or a desperate plea? The ambiguity is precisely the point. Stripped of context, sender, and recipient, these words become a vessel for the viewer's own longing, memory, or doubt. The scale of the work amplifies this effect, confronting the viewer with language that demands to be felt rather than simply read. Within Stefanski's broader practice, "We Were Meant For Each Other" continues his excavation of phrases that carry what he describes as emotional residue—language worn smooth by use yet still capable of piercing through. His paintings function as monuments to the things we say when words are all we have left, transforming the vernacular of human connection into something approaching the sacred. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
