About this work

Eric Stefanski's "We Don't Need Their Approval" presents its titular declaration in stark, uncompromising terms across the canvas surface. The phrase materializes in Stefanski's characteristic hand-rendered letterforms, where the deliberate imperfection of each stroke carries the weight of genuine conviction rather than typographic sterility. The scale of the work—sixty by forty-eight inches—transforms what might read as a simple affirmation into an immersive confrontation, the words occupying enough physical space to feel spoken aloud into the room. The acrylic application reveals the artist's process-driven approach, with visible brushwork and subtle variations in paint density that remind viewers these words were built slowly, letter by letter, through accumulated gesture. This material presence distinguishes Stefanski's text paintings from printed matter or digital reproduction; the message exists as both language and object, meaning layered onto meaning through the act of making itself. Within Stefanski's broader practice, "We Don't Need Their Approval" functions as emotional residue made visible—the kind of internal declaration that sustains us through moments of doubt or external pressure. The statement refuses to specify whose approval has become unnecessary, allowing viewers to locate their own experiences within its framework. A parent, an institution, a former self—the work holds space for countless personal narratives while maintaining its universal directness. The piece exemplifies Stefanski's ongoing investigation into how written language, when rendered through paint and physical labor, can bypass intellectual processing and land directly in the body as felt experience. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
