About this work

Eric Stefanski's "That's Showbiz Baby" delivers its titular phrase in the artist's characteristic hand-rendered typography, the words stacked and sprawling across the canvas in a gesture that feels both casual and deliberate. The lettering carries the imperfect weight of human touch—slightly uneven, boldly present—while the oil medium lends a richness and depth that elevates what might otherwise read as throwaway vernacular into something more contemplative. The palette and surface treatment create a tension between flatness and texture, inviting the viewer to sit with a phrase typically deployed to dismiss disappointment, betrayal, or the cruel absurdities of ambition. There's a weary humor embedded in this work, a shrug made visible. The expression itself belongs to a lexicon of deflection, something muttered backstage after rejection or spoken with a knowing smile when plans collapse. Stefanski captures this emotional register precisely—the painting neither celebrates nor mourns but instead holds space for the complicated resignation the phrase implies. It functions as both armor and admission. Within Stefanski's broader practice, "That's Showbiz Baby" exemplifies his ongoing investigation into language as emotional residue. His text-based works transform common expressions into objects of sustained attention, slowing viewers down long enough to feel the accumulated weight these words carry through countless utterances. The painting asks what happens when we look at something we usually only hear or say in passing. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
