About this work

Eric Stefanski's "That's Hot" presents the iconic phrase in bold, gestural lettering against a richly worked canvas surface, transforming a piece of early-2000s vernacular into something unexpectedly contemplative. The oil paint builds up in layers, with visible brushwork and subtle tonal variations that give the words a physical presence far removed from their origins as throwaway pop culture commentary. Stefanski's handling of the letterforms walks a deliberate line between signage and abstraction—the text is immediately legible yet painterly enough to reward sustained looking. The emotional register here operates on multiple frequencies. There's an initial hit of nostalgia and humor, the phrase carrying its cultural baggage from reality television into the gallery context. But Stefanski's treatment refuses easy irony. The words sit on the canvas with a weight that suggests genuine inquiry into how language accumulates meaning, loses it, and finds it again through repetition and recontextualization. The phrase becomes almost mantra-like, stripped of its original speaker and allowed to function as pure linguistic residue. Within Stefanski's broader practice of text-based painting, "That's Hot" demonstrates his ongoing interest in excavating the emotional sediment left behind by words we've all absorbed, often without choosing to. His canvases act as repositories for collective verbal memory, giving physical form to phrases that float through our consciousness. The work measures 20 x 16 inches, an intimate scale that invites close engagement with both the painted surface and the loaded simplicity of the text. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
