About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Tell Me What Pleasures You" presents the titular phrase in the artist's characteristic hand-rendered text, the words emerging from a luminous, atmospheric ground that hovers between intimacy and confrontation. The letters themselves carry the weight of the question they pose—neither demanding nor passive, but suspended in a space of genuine inquiry that feels almost vulnerable in its directness. Stefanski builds his surfaces through layered applications of paint, allowing earlier marks and color shifts to breathe beneath the final composition, creating a sense of depth that transforms flat text into something approaching sculpture. The work operates in the emotional territory Stefanski has made distinctly his own: that charged space between two people where language becomes both bridge and barrier. The question hangs in the viewer's space, refusing easy interpretation. Is this a lover's whisper, a therapist's prompt, a stranger's provocation? The ambiguity is deliberate, inviting projection while maintaining its own mystery. There is warmth here, but also an edge—the recognition that such questions require courage to ask and perhaps more courage to answer honestly. Within Stefanski's broader practice, this piece exemplifies his interest in language as emotional residue, capturing the specific weight certain phrases carry when spoken between bodies in rooms. His text-based paintings strip away figurative imagery to focus on what actually lingers: the words themselves, echoing long after the moment passes. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
