About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Talk Dirty to Me" delivers the phrase as both invitation and confrontation, the words rendered in his characteristic bold typography against a field that pulses with tension between desire and demand. The composition centers the text with an almost aggressive directness, each letter carrying the weight of countless whispered requests, late-night confessions, and the complicated space where intimacy meets performance. Stefanski's brushwork reveals the labor behind what might initially appear as graphic simplicity—visible strokes and subtle tonal shifts remind viewers that these words have been built by hand, letter by letter, transforming a familiar phrase into something that demands slower consideration. The painting operates in the charged territory Stefanski has made distinctly his own: language stripped from its original context and re-presented as visual object, forcing viewers to sit with words they might otherwise let pass unremarked. "Talk Dirty to Me" captures a phrase so embedded in popular culture—from bedroom whispers to rock anthems—that its actual emotional weight has been dulled through repetition. Stefanski's treatment restores its edge, its vulnerability, its implicit admission of wanting something one perhaps shouldn't ask for directly. The scale amplifies this effect; at sixty by forty-eight inches, the words occupy space with a presence that shifts between seduction and command. Within Stefanski's ongoing investigation of text as emotional residue, this work exemplifies his ability to locate the psychological charge hidden within everyday language, making visible the desire, longing, and human need that accumulate around certain arrangements of letters. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
