About this work

Eric Stefanski's *Survive* (2023) presents the titular word as both declaration and plea, rendered in the artist's characteristic approach where language becomes visceral material rather than mere communication. The painting features the word "SURVIVE" executed in bold, gestural strokes that appear to emerge from and dissolve into the canvas simultaneously. Stefanski's application of oil paint creates a sense of urgency—edges blur and bleed, letters stack or stretch across the 40 x 44 inch surface with an almost desperate energy. The color palette oscillates between muted earth tones and moments of stark contrast, suggesting both exhaustion and resilience in equal measure. What distinguishes Stefanski's text-based practice is his treatment of words as emotional artifacts. In *Survive*, the familiar imperative takes on accumulated weight, carrying traces of every context in which it has been spoken, whispered, or screamed. The physicality of his paint handling—thick impasto passages giving way to thinner, more vulnerable areas—mirrors the psychological terrain the word itself occupies. There is nothing decorative here; the work functions as a kind of excavation, pulling language from the realm of the abstract into something bodily and immediate. Within Stefanski's broader body of work, *Survive* sits among pieces that isolate single words or short phrases, transforming them into meditations on human experience. The scale invites sustained looking, rewarding viewers who sit with the work's quiet intensity. For inquiries regarding acquisition of *Survive*, please contact Guy Hepner gallery in New York.

About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
