About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Sure Whatever Meh" delivers three words stacked vertically on canvas, each phrase a descending scale of emotional investment rendered in the artist's characteristic hand-painted typography. The work captures a contemporary vocabulary of disengagement—language stripped to its most noncommittal, a linguistic shrug made physical through acrylic and gesture. Stefanski treats text not as graphic design but as portraiture of feeling, and here the feeling is studied indifference, the performative apathy that masks deeper currents of exhaustion or self-protection. The painting's substantial scale transforms casual dismissiveness into something monumental, forcing viewers to sit with words typically tossed off in text messages or muttered under breath. Stefanski's brushwork carries the weight his subjects pretend to lack; each letter holds evidence of the hand, of time spent, of care applied to phrases that themselves reject care. This tension—between the labor of making and the carelessness of meaning—generates the work's emotional charge. Within Stefanski's broader practice, "Sure Whatever Meh" continues his excavation of how language accumulates feeling through repetition and context. His canvases function as emotional archaeology, preserving the phrases we use to navigate intimacy, conflict, and the small surrenders of daily life. The work speaks to a generational affect while remaining personally resonant, capturing how we armor ourselves with verbal shrugs while still showing up, still saying something, still present even in our proclaimed absence. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
