About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Stick With Me" presents the titular phrase rendered in his characteristic hand-painted typographic style, where language becomes both image and emotional artifact. The words appear against a muted ground, their letterforms carrying the visible evidence of the artist's hand—subtle drips, variations in opacity, and the textural buildup that distinguishes painted text from its printed counterpart. The composition centers the phrase with deliberate simplicity, allowing the weight of the words themselves to command the canvas without competing visual elements. The emotional register here operates on multiple frequencies. "Stick With Me" reads as both plea and promise, a fragment of intimate dialogue suspended in paint. There is vulnerability in the request, but also quiet confidence—an acknowledgment that connection requires asking, requires the courage of direct address. Stefanski transforms what might be whispered between two people into something monumental, giving permanence to words that typically dissolve into air the moment they're spoken. Within Stefanski's broader practice, this work exemplifies his ongoing investigation into language as emotional residue. His text-based paintings treat words not as information to be read and discarded but as objects worthy of sustained attention. The oil medium adds richness and depth to the surface, each brushstroke embedding the phrase with physical presence. Like much of his output, "Stick With Me" functions as a kind of found poetry—common speech elevated through the slow, deliberate act of painting. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
