About this work

Eric Stefanski's "So Much Bullshit" delivers its message with the blunt force of exasperation made visible. The phrase sits heavy on the canvas, rendered in Stefanski's characteristic approach where typography becomes both subject and vessel. The letters carry weight—not merely as linguistic signifiers but as physical presences built up through layers of oil paint, each stroke contributing to a surface that rewards prolonged looking despite the immediacy of the statement. The work operates in the space between confession and confrontation. There's something deeply relatable in its directness, a verbal shrug that acknowledges the noise and nonsense of contemporary existence without pretending toward resolution. Stefanski treats these words not as graphic design but as emotional archaeology, excavating the feeling beneath everyday language we deploy almost reflexively. The painting captures that specific exhaustion—part frustration, part dark humor—that arrives when pretense finally becomes unbearable. Within Stefanski's broader practice, this piece exemplifies his commitment to language as raw material. His text-based works transform phrases we speak, text, or think into objects worthy of contemplation. The canvas becomes a space where the throwaway becomes permanent, where verbal detritus gains the status traditionally reserved for landscapes or portraits. By isolating these words against the painted field, Stefanski forces a reckoning with how we communicate frustration, authenticity, and the persistent gap between how things are and how they're presented. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
