About this work

Eric Stefanski's *She Tastes Like Heaven* presents the titular phrase in the artist's characteristic hand-rendered lettering, the words emerging from a ground of worked color that carries the weight of something both confessional and urgent. The oil paint—a departure from Stefanski's more frequent use of acrylic—lends the surface a particular luminosity, the letters sitting within rather than upon the canvas, as though the statement has always existed there, waiting to be uncovered. The composition strips away everything but language itself, yet the phrase resists reduction to mere text. It functions instead as emotional artifact, a fragment of intimacy made public, hovering between declaration and memory. Stefanski's practice treats words as both image and residue, the linguistic and the painterly collapsing into a single gesture. There is no irony here, no postmodern distance—the statement arrives with the directness of something overheard, a private utterance now held in the permanent suspension of oil on canvas. The scale, intimate at sixteen by twenty inches, reinforces this sense of proximity, inviting the viewer into a space that feels almost too close, too specific to belong to anyone but the speaker. Yet the universality of longing ensures recognition. We have all tasted something we would call heaven, or wished to. Within Stefanski's broader body of work, *She Tastes Like Heaven* continues his investigation of language as emotional container, each painting a discrete moment of feeling preserved in pigment and syntax. The work is available for acquisition through Guy Hepner, New York.

About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
