About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Send Nudes" (2023) delivers the familiar phrase with disarming directness, transforming a ubiquitous digital request into a confrontation with contemporary intimacy and its casual commodification. Rendered in oil on canvas, the work presents the text in Stefanski's characteristic approach—letters that carry the weight of handmade gesture while echoing the flatness of screen-based communication. The words sit against a carefully considered ground, their presence both bold and strangely vulnerable, as if the act of painting has slowed down a message typically sent in seconds and forced viewers to sit with its implications. Stefanski's practice centers on language as emotional archaeology, treating words not merely as signifiers but as vessels carrying the accumulated residue of every context in which they've been spoken, typed, or whispered. In "Send Nudes," he isolates a phrase so embedded in digital culture that it has become almost meaningless through repetition, yet here it regains a peculiar gravity. The oil medium grounds the ephemeral, lending permanence to what is designed to disappear. There is humor in the work, certainly, but also a meditation on desire, vulnerability, and the strange distances technology creates even as it promises connection. The painting exemplifies Stefanski's ability to locate emotional complexity within the vernacular, finding in throwaway language something worth preserving. It speaks to a generation navigating intimacy through screens while longing for something more tangible. For inquiries regarding acquisition, please contact Guy Hepner gallery in New York.

About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
