About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Queen (Large)" commands attention through its monumental scale, the 60x48 inch canvas creating an immersive field where language transforms into pure visual experience. The word itself—Queen—becomes both subject and surface, rendered in Stefanski's characteristic approach where text dissolves the boundary between readability and abstraction. Layers of oil paint build depth and luminosity, with the letterforms emerging through accumulations of color that suggest crowning, sovereignty, and the weight of presence. The painting carries an emotional register that oscillates between declaration and intimacy. There is assertion here, the boldness of claiming space and title, yet Stefanski's process imbues the work with vulnerability. His text-based practice treats words not as static symbols but as vessels holding collective memory and personal resonance. In "Queen (Large)," the title word arrives already charged—carrying centuries of meaning around power, femininity, identity, and self-coronation. The artist's hand activates these associations while refusing to fix them, allowing viewers to project their own emotional residue onto the surface. Within Stefanski's broader practice, this work demonstrates his continued exploration of language as both barrier and bridge. The scale amplifies what his smaller pieces whisper: that words shape us as much as we shape them. The oil medium marks an evolution, its slower drying time and richer saturation lending the work a gravitas that suits its royal subject matter. The painting exists simultaneously as proclamation and meditation, inviting prolonged looking that rewards with shifting perceptions of depth, color, and meaning. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
