About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Probably Thinking Of You" presents the titular phrase rendered in his characteristic hand-painted typography, the words sprawling across sixty inches of fabric in a composition that feels both intimate and monumental. The enamel and acrylic application creates a surface tension between industrial slickness and the softness of the fabric substrate, a departure from his typical canvas work that introduces new material vulnerability. The lettering carries the deliberate imperfection of human touch—slight variations in weight, subtle drips or pooling where the brush lingered—transforming what could be a simple statement into something approaching confession. The phrase itself operates in Stefanski's signature register of emotional ambiguity. "Probably" does all the heavy lifting here, introducing doubt into what might otherwise read as romantic reassurance. Is this longing, obsession, casual affection, or something closer to a lie we tell ourselves? The work refuses to clarify, instead holding space for all these readings simultaneously. Against the fabric ground, the words take on the quality of a thought that won't stay contained, bleeding slightly into the weave of everyday life. Within Stefanski's broader practice, this piece continues his investigation of language as emotional artifact—words stripped from their original context and presented as objects worthy of sustained attention. The shift to fabric suggests expansion, a willingness to let his text-based explorations migrate across surfaces and materials while maintaining their core inquiry into how we use language to reach toward others, often imperfectly. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
