About this work

Eric Stefanski's "More Joy" presents the titular phrase rendered in the artist's characteristic hand-painted typography, the words commanding the canvas with an immediacy that oscillates between declaration and plea. The letters emerge in bold, gestural strokes against a ground that carries the subtle evidence of layering—previous iterations perhaps, or simply the accumulated presence of the artist's process made visible beneath the final statement. Stefanski's approach to oil on canvas here maintains the raw directness found throughout his practice, where language becomes simultaneously image and artifact, stripped of commercial gloss yet retaining an almost confrontational intimacy. The emotional register of the work operates in that fertile territory between sincerity and irony that defines so much of Stefanski's output. "More Joy" reads as instruction, affirmation, and quiet desperation in equal measure—the request for abundance suggesting its current absence. The scale of the piece, at sixty by forty-eight inches, gives the words a physical presence that demands engagement; viewers cannot passively receive the message but must instead reckon with it as both linguistic content and painterly object. Within Stefanski's broader practice, where words function as emotional residue left behind by lived experience, "More Joy" continues his investigation into how language accumulates meaning through repetition, context, and the simple act of being rendered permanent in paint. The work transforms a common phrase into something weighted with longing, humor, and hard-won optimism. For acquisition inquiries regarding "More Joy," please contact Guy Hepner gallery in New York.

About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
