About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Miss You" (2025) presents the titular phrase rendered in his characteristic hand-painted lettering, the words floating against a softly modulated ground that shifts between warm and cool tones. The brushwork carries visible texture, each letter formed with deliberate imperfection—edges that bleed slightly, strokes that vary in density and saturation. This is not typography but painting, and the distinction matters: these words have been labored over, built up through layers of oil pigment that catch light differently across the surface. The phrase itself operates in that precarious space between sentiment and cliché, a message so common it appears on greeting cards and text screens countless times daily. Yet isolated on canvas, stripped of context and sender, "Miss You" becomes something heavier. Who is speaking? To whom? The absence of quotation marks or attribution transforms the statement into a kind of universal utterance, an emotional residue left behind after the specific circumstances have dissolved. The work asks whether longing can be distilled to its linguistic essence, and whether that essence retains any power once extracted. Within Stefanski's broader practice, "Miss You" continues his investigation of text as both visual form and emotional vessel. His paintings treat common phrases as found objects worthy of examination—banal expressions that nonetheless carry the full weight of human connection and its failures. The intimacy of the format, at just sixteen by twenty inches, reinforces the work's quiet intensity, demanding close looking rather than commanding space. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
