About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Love Me For Fucks Sake" presents its titular plea in bold, unfiltered typography that dominates the canvas with raw urgency. The words stretch across the 48 x 60 inch surface, their scale transforming a private desperation into a confrontational demand that viewers cannot avoid. Stefanski's brushwork carries the weight of the statement—visible strokes and textural variations in the paint surface suggest the physical labor of emotion, each letter laid down with deliberate imperfection that resists the sterility of printed text. The work operates in the space between vulnerability and aggression, its profanity punctuating what might otherwise read as simple longing. There is nothing coy here; the artist strips language to its most essential function as a carrier of feeling, presenting words not as representation but as emotional residue made visible. The directness is almost uncomfortable, implicating the viewer as both witness and addressee of this unguarded appeal. Within Stefanski's broader practice, the piece exemplifies his commitment to text as primary subject rather than supplement. His canvases treat words as pictorial elements worthy of the same attention traditionally reserved for figurative or abstract imagery, mining the visual and affective potential of language itself. The work sits firmly within a lineage of text-based painting while maintaining Stefanski's distinctive voice—one that privileges emotional authenticity over ironic distance or conceptual remove. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
