About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Love" presents the word itself as both subject and substance, rendered in oil on canvas with the directness that defines his text-based practice. The four letters occupy the composition with quiet authority, their forms built through layered brushwork that reveals the physical process of their making. Stefanski treats typography not as graphic design but as emotional architecture, each stroke carrying the accumulated weight of what the word has meant, been spoken, been withheld. The surface holds the evidence of deliberation—areas where paint has been worked and reworked, edges that soften or sharpen depending on where the eye lands. This is language stripped of context yet saturated with it, a word so overused it risks meaninglessness, here reclaimed through the slow, attentive act of painting. Stefanski understands that "love" arrives to us already heavy, already complicated, and his rendering honors that complexity rather than simplifying it into sentiment. Within his broader practice, this work continues his examination of how words function as vessels for feeling. His canvases ask us to look longer at language we typically pass through without pause, to consider the gap between what we say and what we mean. The intimacy of the 16 x 20 inch scale invites close viewing, a private encounter with a public word. "Love" demonstrates Stefanski's ability to transform the familiar into something that demands renewed attention, making it a significant addition to any collection engaged with contemporary text-based painting. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
