About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Let's Fuck" (2023) delivers its message with the artist's characteristic directness, the titular phrase rendered in his distinctive hand across the canvas surface. The work measures an intimate 20 x 16 inches, a scale that draws viewers into close proximity with language typically spoken in whispers or shouted in moments of abandon. Stefanski's brushwork carries the physical weight of the statement—each letter formed through deliberate gestural marks that transform typography into something bodily and urgent. The paint application varies between thick impasto passages and thinner washes, creating a surface that breathes and pulses with material presence. Within Stefanski's text-based practice, this piece occupies a space of radical vulnerability. Where some of his works traffic in melancholy or existential questioning, "Let's Fuck" strips away pretense entirely, presenting desire in its most unadorned form. The words function simultaneously as invitation, demand, and confession. There is no irony here, no conceptual distance—only the raw articulation of want made permanent in oil. The work sits comfortably within a lineage of text-based painting from Ed Ruscha to Christopher Wool, yet Stefanski's approach feels less detached, more like emotional graffiti preserved under gallery lighting. The painting captures something fleeting—the moment before response, the suspended tension of proposition—and holds it still. Language that might otherwise dissolve into air gains permanence and weight, becoming an object one can own and return to. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
