About this work

Eric Stefanski's "It Will Be Too Late For You When Im Famous" delivers its message with the blunt force of a declaration scrawled in a moment of wounded determination. The text sprawls across the canvas in Stefanski's characteristic hand-rendered lettering, each word carrying the weight of rejection transformed into resolve. The scale—60 by 80 inches—ensures the viewer cannot look away, cannot dismiss the statement as mere sentiment. This is confrontation sized for a wall, for a life. Stefanski works in the space between vulnerability and defiance, and this piece occupies that tension with particular intensity. The words read as both threat and promise, the kind of thing muttered after a door closes or typed and deleted before sending. By committing it to oil on canvas, Stefanski elevates the fleeting emotional impulse to something permanent, something worth examining. The painting asks who among us hasn't harbored this exact fantasy—the vindication of future success proving past doubters wrong. Within his broader practice, this work exemplifies Stefanski's commitment to text as emotional residue. He treats language not as design element but as confession, each painting a fragment of interior monologue made external. The rawness feels earned rather than performed, the artist's hand visible in every letter. There is no ironic distance here, no winking at the viewer. The statement stands alone, stripped of context yet universally legible. For acquisition inquiries regarding this work, please contact Guy Hepner gallery in New York.

About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
