About this work

Eric Stefanski's *It Feels Good To Be This Romantic* presents its titular phrase in the artist's characteristic hand-rendered script, the words sprawling across the canvas with an intimacy that hovers between confession and declaration. The text dominates the composition, its letters slightly irregular, bearing the unmistakable evidence of the human hand rather than mechanical reproduction. Stefanski builds his surfaces through layered applications of acrylic, creating a tactile depth that rewards sustained attention—paint accumulates and recedes, suggesting the way emotional truths settle into us over time. The statement itself carries a particular vulnerability, an admission of tenderness in an era often marked by ironic distance. There is something almost defiant in claiming romance as a source of pleasure, in refusing the protective stance of cynicism. Stefanski's work consistently occupies this territory, transforming language into visual experience and locating genuine feeling within the flatness of text. His paintings function as emotional artifacts, capturing sentiments that might otherwise dissipate in the speed of daily life. Within his broader practice, this work exemplifies Stefanski's ability to distill complex interior states into deceptively simple declarations. The scale—sixty by forty-eight inches—grants the phrase a commanding presence, demanding that viewers sit with its meaning rather than scroll past. The words become monumental, weighted with the accumulated significance of every time such feelings have been felt and rarely spoken aloud. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
