About this work

Eric Stefanski's "I'm The Fool Who Keep Coming Back" presents its titular confession in stark, hand-rendered lettering against a muted ground, the words functioning simultaneously as declaration and wound. The grammatical imperfection—"who keep" rather than "who keeps"—reads as deliberately unpolished, mirroring the raw, unedited quality of thought caught mid-spiral. Stefanski's brushwork carries visible texture, each letter bearing the weight of its making, the paint built up in places where emphasis naturally falls. The composition centers the text with an almost confrontational directness, refusing decorative distraction and forcing the viewer into uncomfortable recognition. This work exemplifies Stefanski's ongoing investigation into language as emotional artifact. His text-based paintings treat words not as graphic design elements but as material evidence of interior states—the things we tell ourselves in loops, the phrases that become grooves worn into consciousness. The scale here, at 44 by 34 inches, approximates the dimensions of a body, suggesting the statement as something carried physically, a posture of return and repetition. There is something both pathetic and defiant in this admission. The fool knows their foolishness yet persists, and Stefanski's rendering refuses to judge this contradiction. The work sits within his broader practice of excavating the embarrassing, the repetitive, the stubbornly human patterns we perform despite knowing better. It speaks to cycles in relationships, in habits, in hope itself. For acquisition inquiries regarding this work, interested collectors are encouraged to contact Guy Hepner gallery in New York.

About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
