About this work

Eric Stefanski's "I'm Going To Be A Star" presents its titular declaration in the artist's characteristic hand-rendered text, the words sprawling across the canvas with an urgency that feels both aspirational and fragile. The phrase, so loaded with American mythology—the promise of fame, the hunger for recognition, the belief that wanting something badly enough might make it real—becomes a kind of incantation when isolated against the painting's surface. Stefanski's brushwork carries the imperfection of human gesture, each letter bearing the trace of the hand that formed it, transforming what could be a throwaway affirmation into something approaching confession. At sixty by forty-eight inches, the scale demands presence, forcing viewers into confrontation with a statement they may have once whispered to themselves or heard from someone who never quite arrived. The work operates in the liminal space between sincerity and irony, allowing both readings to coexist without resolution. This ambiguity is central to Stefanski's practice, where language functions not as information but as emotional residue—the sediment left behind after hope, delusion, and determination have passed through a life. Within his broader body of work, "I'm Going To Be A Star" continues Stefanski's investigation of phrases that carry outsized cultural weight, words that have been spoken millions of times yet retain their capacity to move us, embarrass us, or break our hearts. The painting asks who gets to say this, who gets to mean it, and what happens to those who believed it. For acquisition inquiries, contact Guy Hepner gallery in New York.

About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
