About this work

Eric Stefanski's "I'm A Moody Motherfucker" delivers its declaration with unapologetic directness, the phrase rendered in the artist's characteristic hand-painted lettering across the canvas surface. The work operates in the tension between confession and confrontation, transforming a moment of raw self-awareness into something approaching manifesto. Stefanski's brushwork carries the weight of the statement—each letter bearing the subtle irregularities and gestural traces that distinguish painting from print, reminding us that these words have been labored over, considered, lived with. The scale at 48 by 60 inches gives the phrase commanding presence, demanding engagement rather than permitting the viewer to glance and move on. Within Stefanski's broader practice, language functions not merely as content but as emotional archaeology. His text-based works excavate the phrases we use to navigate interior life, isolating them against fields of color or absence until they vibrate with accumulated meaning. "I'm A Moody Motherfucker" sits comfortably within this investigation—it is at once self-deprecating and defiant, an admission that doubles as permission. The profanity punctures any pretense of gallery decorum, while the vulnerability of the confession undercuts its aggression. This is painting as emotional residue, capturing the particular exhaustion and dark humor of simply being a person who feels too much, too variably, too often. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
