About this work

Eric Stefanski's "I'm A Moody Mother Fucker" confronts viewers with its unapologetic declaration rendered in bold, gestural lettering across the canvas. The oil paint builds in visible layers, with the words emerging from a ground that shifts between muted tones and moments of raw, exposed texture. Drips and impasto passages reveal the physical act of painting, each brushstroke carrying the weight of emotional confession. The letterforms themselves resist clean graphic precision—they slur and bleed at their edges, suggesting something handwritten in haste or spoken through gritted teeth. The work operates in the space between linguistic directness and painterly abstraction. Stefanski treats words not as symbols to be read and dismissed but as material substances that hold feeling within their very formation. The profanity here functions without irony or provocation for its own sake; instead, it reads as radical honesty, the kind of self-admission usually kept private. There is vulnerability beneath the aggressive surface, an acknowledgment of interior weather that refuses to be smoothed over or made palatable. Within Stefanski's broader practice, this piece exemplifies his commitment to language as emotional residue—the trace left behind when feeling passes through the body and onto the surface. His canvases function as documents of psychological states, capturing moods in the moment of their articulation rather than their resolution. The scale demands presence; at 48 by 60 inches, the statement fills peripheral vision and refuses easy dismissal. For acquisition inquiries, please contact Guy Hepner gallery in New York.

About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
