About this work

Eric Stefanski's "I'm A Genius/I'm A Fraud" presents a stark duality rendered in the artist's characteristic text-based approach, where language becomes both image and confession. The canvas divides between two opposing declarations, their arrangement creating a visual tension that mirrors the psychological oscillation embedded in the words themselves. Stefanski's brushwork carries the weight of each statement differently—the assertive claim of genius perhaps rendered with bolder strokes, while the admission of fraudulence might appear in a more tentative or frantic hand, though both emerge from the same source, the same mind, the same moment of creative reckoning. The scale of the work, at sixty by forty-eight inches, ensures these internal monologues command physical space, refusing to let the viewer dismiss them as passing thoughts. This is imposter syndrome writ large, externalized and hung on a wall where it can no longer fester privately. Stefanski treats words as emotional residue, and here the residue is the endless loop familiar to anyone who creates: the swing between conviction and collapse, between feeling touched by something larger and suspecting you've fooled everyone, including yourself. Within Stefanski's broader practice, this piece functions as a distillation of creative anxiety, stripping away narrative context to leave only the raw binary that haunts studios and desks everywhere. The work speaks to artists and audiences alike, its honesty uncomfortable and relieving in equal measure. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
