About this work

Eric Stefanski's "I'll Die When I Want To" presents the titular phrase rendered in his characteristic text-based approach, where language becomes both image and emotional vessel. The words occupy the canvas with a presence that oscillates between defiance and vulnerability, painted in Stefanski's distinctive hand that treats typography as something deeply personal rather than mechanical. The brushwork carries visible texture and subtle imperfections, lending the statement an intimacy that contradicts its bold declaration. Against the canvas, the text exists not as graphic design but as painted gesture, each letter bearing the weight of its own making. The emotional register here is unmistakably confrontational yet strangely tender. Stefanski captures a particular kind of autonomy—the insistence on self-determination pushed to its most absolute conclusion. There is dark humor threaded through the defiance, a wry acknowledgment of mortality that refuses to be solemn about it. The statement reads as both shield and confession, the kind of thing one might think but rarely say aloud, now given permanent form in oil. Within Stefanski's broader practice, this work exemplifies his commitment to language as emotional residue. His paintings transform interior monologue into exterior declaration, giving visual weight to the phrases that loop through consciousness. The words become artifacts of feeling, preserved in pigment. "I'll Die When I Want To" sits comfortably among his explorations of autonomy, resistance, and the complicated relationship between vulnerability and bravado. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
