About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Grocery List - Yellow" presents a luminous field of warm yellow that envelops the viewer while serving as the ground for handwritten text rendered in the artist's distinctive style. The words themselves—ordinary items one might scribble before heading to the store—become monuments to the quotidian, transformed through scale and the deliberate slowness of oil paint into something approaching the sacred. At 48 by 60 inches, the work commands attention, its domestic subject matter made monumental, forcing us to reckon with the poetry hidden in our most mundane rituals. Stefanski's practice consistently mines the territory between language and emotion, treating words not merely as carriers of meaning but as visual forms laden with psychological weight. The grocery list, that most disposable of documents, here becomes a meditation on care, sustenance, and the invisible labor of keeping a household alive. The yellow ground radiates with an almost aggressive optimism, yet the handwritten quality of the text introduces intimacy and vulnerability—someone's hand moved across this surface, someone thought about what was needed. The emotional register hovers between warmth and melancholy, as all lists imply absence: these are things not yet possessed, needs not yet met. Stefanski captures what he calls the "emotional residue" of language—the feelings that cling to words long after their practical purpose has been served. The work sits comfortably within his broader exploration of text as both barrier and bridge, simultaneously revealing and concealing the interior life. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
