About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Good Sex Will Keep Us Together" presents the titular phrase rendered in his characteristic hand-painted text, the words functioning simultaneously as declaration, hope, and quiet uncertainty. The oil on canvas work measures an intimate 20 x 16 inches, a scale that draws viewers into close proximity with the statement, as if overhearing a private confession or reading a note left on a kitchen counter. Stefanski's brushwork carries the subtle imperfections of human handwriting—slight variations in letter weight, the organic wobble of lines that refuse mechanical precision. The text becomes a kind of emotional artifact, holding within its painted letters all the vulnerability and bravado of someone trying to convince themselves as much as anyone else. The phrase itself operates in that charged territory between sincerity and irony that defines so much of Stefanski's practice. Is this a celebration of physical intimacy as genuine connective tissue, or a wry acknowledgment of relationships reduced to their most transactional elements? The work refuses to answer, instead letting the ambiguity resonate. Like much of Stefanski's text-based painting, the piece transforms language into emotional residue—words stripped from their original context and suspended in pigment, carrying the weight of every time they've been thought, spoken, or whispered in the dark. Within Stefanski's broader body of work, this painting continues his examination of how simple statements can contain multitudes, how the things we tell ourselves become mantras, warnings, or wishes. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
