About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Fuck It" (2023) presents the titular phrase rendered in his characteristic hand-painted lettering, the words occupying the canvas with an immediacy that oscillates between resignation and liberation. The oil paint application carries visible evidence of the artist's gesture—brushstrokes that betray neither haste nor hesitation, but rather a deliberate commitment to the phrase's weighted simplicity. The composition strips away contextual imagery, allowing the typography itself to function as both subject and emotional container. Within Stefanski's text-based practice, language becomes a vehicle for accumulated feeling, each word arriving on canvas carrying the psychic residue of countless utterances. "Fuck It" channels a universal moment of surrender, that precise instant when deliberation collapses into release. The phrase holds dual registers: it can signal defeat or defiance, giving up or breaking free. Stefanski's treatment refuses to resolve this ambiguity, instead letting the tension remain productive. The scale—intimate at 20 x 16 inches—suggests a private declaration rather than a public announcement, something muttered to oneself before a difficult decision or after an inevitable disappointment. The work exemplifies Stefanski's ongoing investigation into how vernacular language accumulates emotional weight through repetition and context. His paintings function as linguistic artifacts, preserving phrases at their most charged. There is nothing ironic in the execution; the sincerity of the painted surface meets the rawness of the sentiment without deflection. The result is disarmingly direct—a painting that names what often goes unspoken. For acquisition inquiries regarding this work, please contact Guy Hepner gallery in New York.

About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
