About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Ex" presents the word itself in stark, bold lettering against a muted ground, transforming two simple letters into a charged emotional artifact. The composition centers the text with deliberate weight, allowing the brevity of the word to amplify its psychological density. Stefanski's brushwork carries visible texture and gestural energy, lending the painted letters a sense of urgency that belies their apparent simplicity. The oil medium creates subtle tonal variations within the letterforms, suggesting layers of meaning built up and reconsidered, much like the complicated feelings the word itself evokes. The piece operates in the space between language and pure visual expression, where a common term becomes stripped of its casual usage and forced into confrontation with the viewer. "Ex" functions as shorthand for severance, for what came before, for identities once shared and now divided. Stefanski treats this linguistic fragment as emotional residue—the trace left behind when relationships dissolve into memory and vocabulary. Within the artist's broader practice, this work exemplifies his commitment to text as both subject and medium, exploring how words carry weight far beyond their dictionary definitions. His paintings ask viewers to sit with language, to feel its contours rather than simply read its surface. The economy of means here—a single syllable, a restrained palette, modest scale—creates an intimacy that larger, more complex compositions might obscure. For collectors drawn to conceptual rigor paired with emotional accessibility, "Ex" represents a compelling entry point into Stefanski's evolving body of work, available for acquisition through Guy Hepner in New York.

About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
