About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Don't Deserve Me" presents a declarative statement rendered with the artist's characteristic directness, transforming a phrase heavy with romantic defiance into a visual object that lingers in the space between confession and confrontation. The words occupy the canvas with deliberate weight, their arrangement and execution carrying the emotional charge that traditional portraiture might locate in a subject's expression or posture. Stefanski's brushwork imbues each letter with material presence—the oil medium allowing for subtle variations in texture and opacity that give the text a physicality beyond mere signage. The work operates in the territory Stefanski has made his own: the aftermath of feeling, where language becomes the artifact left behind by experience. "Don't Deserve Me" suggests a moment of self-assertion, perhaps the residue of a relationship's end or the quiet mantra of someone reclaiming their worth. The statement resists easy categorization—it could read as bitter, empowered, or simply matter-of-fact depending on the viewer's own emotional framework. This ambiguity is central to Stefanski's practice, which treats words not as illustrations of feeling but as feeling itself made visible. Within his broader body of work, this piece exemplifies the artist's ability to locate the universal within the specific, to find in common phrases the weight of lived experience. The intimate scale invites close looking, a private encounter with a public declaration. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
