About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Do Whatever You Want!" delivers its titular phrase with the artist's characteristic urgency, the words sprawling across the canvas in gestural strokes that blur the boundary between language and pure visual expression. The painting commands attention through its scale and directness, the exclamatory text rendered in Stefanski's distinctive hand—letters that seem to vibrate with emotional charge, their edges softened or sharpened according to the pressure and speed of application. The composition balances negative space against the density of the letterforms, allowing the message to breathe while maintaining an almost confrontational presence. The phrase itself carries layered meaning, functioning simultaneously as permission, challenge, and perhaps even quiet desperation. There's liberation in the words but also an undertone of exhaustion, as if the statement emerges from someone who has finally relinquished control or expectation. This emotional complexity is central to Stefanski's practice, where text becomes a vessel for feelings too tangled to express through imagery alone. The paint application reveals process—visible brushwork, moments of hesitation and conviction preserved in the surface—transforming familiar words into something newly urgent. Within Stefanski's broader body of work, this piece exemplifies his interest in phrases that resist easy categorization, occupying the space between encouragement and indifference, empowerment and abandonment. The oil medium adds richness and depth to his palette, the luminosity of the paint lending warmth to what might otherwise read as detachment. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
