About this work

Eric Stefanski's *Come On Baby* presents text as both image and invitation, the titular phrase rendered in the artist's characteristic hand across the canvas surface. The words carry the weight of countless utterances—plea, seduction, exasperation, encouragement—their meaning shifting depending on the voice we imagine speaking them. Stefanski treats language not as something to be read and moved past but as something to be sat with, its emotional residue accumulating the longer we look. The composition strips away context, leaving only the phrase itself to do its work. There is an intimacy here, the words suggesting a moment caught mid-conversation, a fragment of dialogue that could belong to anyone. The brushwork reveals the artist's hand, each letter bearing traces of its making, lending warmth to what might otherwise feel clinical or detached. This tension between the personal and the universal sits at the heart of Stefanski's practice—his paintings function as mirrors, reflecting back whatever emotional state the viewer brings to them. Within his broader body of work, *Come On Baby* continues Stefanski's exploration of how common phrases become charged containers for human experience. The scale feels deliberately intimate, asking for close looking rather than commanding a room. The words hover between demand and desire, their ambiguity holding space for projection and memory. Like all of Stefanski's text paintings, this work transforms the familiar into something worth lingering over, something worth feeling. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
